This week’s weather has been absolutely terrible. Monday, Tuesday, and today (Wednesday) have all recorded high temps of well above 90 degrees. At times, it was over 100, depending on where exactly you were.

These high temps would be expected in July/August, but early June? It’s made for a miserable week. You just can’t escape the sweltering temperatures. It’s taxing on the air conditioning as it not only tries to cool the rooms, but remove the high humidity. Both tasks have been difficult for my little window unit to manage.

There appears to be some relief on the horizon. Tomorrow, it’s not even supposed to hit 70 degrees all day! If the humidity isn’t bad, it’s going to be an incredible day.

I expect to be quite busy the rest of the week because you really shouldn’t exert yourself very much outside with this type of weather. A lot of people end up in the hospital with sunstroke and all manners of heat-related medical problems.

I tend to follow the Weather Channel’s advice regarding these hot days of summer: relax, stay inside or in the shade if outdoors, and drink plenty of water.

The same computer I had to replace the case fan last week just got hit by a piece of malware. I admit I should be more proactive in keeping this system updated, but I’m disappointed in Zap2it’s inability to secure their own website. They’re owned by Tribune, an enormous company with a lot of IT professionals. I would think they’d be well equipped to combat any would-be hackers interested in planting code in their server.

Had I not had a second computer to look for help with the removal of this piece of malware, I may never have gotten it removed. The malware hijacked the web browsers on my PC, making it impossible to search for help on the infected PC.

I tried transferring the required removal tools via Google Desktop, but the file transfer was rejected by the malware. I ended up wasting a perfectly good DVDR on less than 1 MB of software because I couldn’t find my damn USB thumb drive.

Zap2it’s issues now have me looking for a new TV Listings site. They were by far the best listings site.

I was busy working around the house, doing a few repairs which required the use of a hammer. I guess it’s been a while since I swung a hammer because it wasn’t long into the project that I smacked my thumb with the hammer. Ouch. Okay, that wasn’t the actual word that came out of my mouth, but I’m sure you can imagine what it was. I think we’ve all been there. LOL.

Instead of the usual redness and obvious pain, I actually got a blood blister, something I’ve never had before. It’s very strange and is has formed right where the hammer hit my thumb, to the left of the thumbnail (since I’m a right-handed person). You can see a photo of what a blood blister looks like on wikipedia. It’s not very attractive. It is tender to the touch, however.

All of this happened before the evening news when I was shocked to learn of the Osama Bin Laden mission in Pakistan. That was a nice piece of news to go to bed with. A lot of countries have sacrificed a lot of lives and money in the pursuit of this man and I’m glad he’s finally dead. I’m not one to wish bad things to people, but Bin Laden had it coming.

Over the last six months, Charter has rolled out I believe two free internet speed upgrades and they haven’t been shy about saying it. At times, Charter’s ads for patting themselves on the back outnumber any other single company. I don’t think even Geiko can compete in the number of ads I’m seeing now.

What bugs me the most about these upgrades isn’t the self-congratulatory advertisements. It’s the bandwidth cap. Charter apparently has plenty of bandwidth to go around so they offer minuscule speed bumps all the while keeping moderate to heavy users in line with their monthly bandwidth caps. 100GB a month doesn’t quite cut it in the 21st century if you want my honest opinion.

I don’t know about other people, but I hate shoe shopping. Local stores don’t have my size (15!) so I have to do everything online. Picking the right shoe size used to be difficult until I began buying New Balance shoes a few years ago.

When I was a kid, my mom would always have to take me and my brother to the sports stores (Dicks, Foot Locker) to get shoes because they sold so many basketball shoes. Those were the only types of shoes that seemed to come in our size. The problem I’ve had with basketball shoes from Nike (the only brand we liked) was they only cared about the length of the shoe. My problem was my feet were also pretty wide so the standard 15 shoe was always tight across my foot.

A few years ago I decided to give New Balance a try and have been a loyal customer ever since.

Here are my new shoes, the New Balance 654 Tennis Shoes:

I’m a pretty simple guy when it comes to style. Bold colors aren’t my thing. A simple white shoe with black, blue, red, etc is fine. I’m more interested in the shoe’s comfort than how it looks.

My first day in the shoes was excellent. There’s a certain “springiness” to a new pair of shoes. The shoe’s cushioning hasn’t been killed with the hundreds if not thousands of miles a person will put on a pair of shoes over the course of a shoe’s lifespan. New Balance’s “ABZORB” cushioning feels great.

I don’t intend to wear my old shoes ever again. There’s no going back now.

I hate being sick. Every winter like clockwork I seem to get sick. This time, I believe I have the flu and I blame my dad for it. He came down with it and passed it on to me like Typhoid Mary.

Coincidentally, my mom got her flu shot two weeks ago so her immune system is acting like a ninja, destroying every bit of the flu bug that comes near her. Timing is everything in life.

There’s nothing about being sick that feels good. I would say the constant temperature changes are the worst aspects about the flu. I can’t stand being freezing cold and then suddenly overheating like a menopausal woman. Cooling down is easy, but warming back up to a comfortable temp after shivering can take more than a half-hour.

After hurting my back a few weeks ago, I decided to return to the gym and see how things would go. It turned out to be one of the hottest days thus far this summer. Even though the gym has air conditioning, the owner doesn’t seem to have it turned up very high… or low, depending on how you want to look at it. The humidity and temperature were only slightly below what it was outside.

I pushed myself a little harder than I intended and I’m paying for it the day after. My chest and triceps are sore today, but I don’t regret hitting the gym like I did.

I need to get back to going regularly, however. I have done a poor job with my attendance. I haven’t lost any weight this year because of it. My time on the treadmill yesterday was miserable. I didn’t go nearly as far as I used to be able to and I have to stop every few minutes to catch my breath and take a drink. Part of that was the heat, but I’d chalk it up mostly to my poor conditioning. I’m determined to get back to my old routine and get things going in a positive direction again.

The job market’s rough. There are a lot of people out of work and a lot of competition for every opening out there. I’ve had four job interviews and I’d have to say the last was the worst. Well, it wasn’t really the interview that went poorly, it was something that happened at the end.

I went in for a position with Sears. I’ve always loved Sears and I thought the entry level job was a good way to get into a brand I’ve always liked. The interview went okay, but at the end, the woman interviewing me said I’d be told at the end of the week or the beginning of the following week if I got the job or not. She was going to present my resume and the notes she took during the interview to the other staff members in the end-of-the-week staff meeting.

I said “okay, thank you” and left.

When I got home, I received a rejection email. What?! Not 15 minutes after I left Sears I was rejected! What happened to consulting with her fellow staff members?

My previously high opinion of Sears took a bit hit last week. I don’t know why they would hire someone who would lie straight to a potential employee’s face like that. I wish the people at Sears would do a review of the local Sears human resource office.
