I wanted to make a simple plea to specialty label Twilight Time, who recently announced the rights to several Sony movies for eventual release on Bluray. No specific films were mentioned, but I really have an issue with their business plan.

The Egyptian, a great 1950s film, was released at $40 on Bluray and limited to just 3000 copies. As much as I would have liked to have bought the film, there’s no way I’m going to pay that much for it. Drop the price and raise the number of copies available and you’ll do better.

Limiting your release to 3000 copies is almost begging pirates to make your movie available on bittorrent. You might as well just send them a copy!

To my amazement, I actually remembered today and it turns out a Danish alternative pop band called The Asteroids Galaxy Tour made the song. “The Golden Age” is a pretty hard song to get out of your head after seeing three or four Heineken commercials a day (or so it seems).

Not only does Heineken have the commercial on YouTube, but the band’s music video for the song is as well. Take a look at the two if you’re not familiar with them. The music video is a bit trippy.

Over the last six months, Charter has rolled out I believe two free internet speed upgrades and they haven’t been shy about saying it. At times, Charter’s ads for patting themselves on the back outnumber any other single company. I don’t think even Geiko can compete in the number of ads I’m seeing now.

What bugs me the most about these upgrades isn’t the self-congratulatory advertisements. It’s the bandwidth cap. Charter apparently has plenty of bandwidth to go around so they offer minuscule speed bumps all the while keeping moderate to heavy users in line with their monthly bandwidth caps. 100GB a month doesn’t quite cut it in the 21st century if you want my honest opinion.

I watched a little bit of tonight’s new episode of the reality series Undercover Boss on CBS and was shocked by what I saw. One of the employees of an amusement park showed another employee some ideas he had for a ride and he didn’t pull out a sheet of paper and pen. He pulled out his laptop and on it was RollerCoaster Tycoon.

I haven’t played that game in a long time. Even when I was running RCT Station, I only played the game for a few years. I haven’t had it installed or playing in at least three years. I couldn’t help but be shocked and somewhat overjoyed to see that old game show up on television.

I’ll have screenshots up in the morning.

I don’t usually blog about movies, but I figured I’d share some quick opinions on the latest box office hit, Avatar. I’ve liked James Cameron’s past work, but I just couldn’t get behind Avatar.

The promos never impressed me and after seeing the movie, this movie reminded me of what’s wrong with the video game industry. So much emphasis is put into stunning graphics that the producers don’t put any work on the story. Almost every reasonably successful PC game now is some pointless first person shooter and the success of Cameron’s latest film reminded me of it.

There’s no question that Avatar looked stunning, but it doesn’t make up for a relatively mediocre story. The love story was worse than most made-for-TV garbage. The militaristic approach to dealing with a pesky a native population story was so cliche-ridden I wanted to vomit.

I lost interest in the film a lot earlier than I suppose I should have. There should be more to a movie than pretty graphics.

Every once in a while I feel like watching something an older movie or tv show and last week I popped the first two DVDs of season one of MacGyver in my DVD player and was instantly taken back to the 80s, a time which looks makes things so much more simple than they are today. I was born in the eighties so I likely didn’t see the first few seasons when they originally aired, but I do remember watching this show as a kid, waiting for Mondays to come around.

It’s unclear what it was exactly that I liked about the show… probably the action because as a kid, I also enjoyed Dukes of Hazzard and professional wrestling, so it goes hand in hand with the action on those shows.

However, as I grew up, I think one of the attractive things about the show is the fact that one man can use his mind to overcome just about any obstacle. Sure, it can be said that many of Mac’s creations were completely fake or greatly exaggerated as to their effectiveness, but many of his creations were real.

The show is quite tame to today’s standards. The blood and gore was much more family friendly.

And then there’s the simplicity of life. Imagine a time when having an unlisted number actually meant you wouldn’t be called all day by the robo-telemarketers. MacGyver show does a great job of showing how far we’ve come with the advancements in computing power.

I hope MacGyver creator Lee David Zlotoff doesn’t go through with his plan for a movie if Richard Dean Anderson isn’t involved. RDA was everything to this show. I can’t imagine watching Mac being played by anyone else. Burn Notice is darn close to a modern successor. There’s no need for a “MacGyver II” series featuring his son or something silly like that.

On a side note, can we not let the “MacGruber” finish filming. It’s ridiculous that SNL has allowed that sketch to go beyond the first two or three. They aren’t funny anymore and I can’t imagine what they’re doing turning MacGruber into a feature film. Keep them as terrible SNL sketches, not a bad feature film.

However, it’s hard for me not to notice the popularity of Comic-Con thanks to Twitter, just to start.

A web without Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace doesn’t seem like all that long ago. My, how the web has changed since I really got into it in 1998-99.

Some of the best shows on television are at Comic-Con this year and some of them are my favorites. PSYCH (USA Network) happens to be one of them and they’re giving out exclusive PSYCH comic books to a couple of lucky fans at Comic-Con.

Alright, I finally opened my wallet and forked out a nice stack of cash for a Panasonic Plasma HDTV and Panasonic Blu-Ray player (along with a few movies), but I have a question about the BD-Live feature that many discs are coming with.

I presume all BD-Live content is stored on remote servers and is downloaded much like one would download a demo via Xbox Live. So what happens when those servers go down?

This is one of my concerns with PC gaming authentification procedures. If the authentification server(s) goes down in X number of years after the game is released, how do you get to play the game?

The same is true with these BD-Live options. If I buy a Blu-Ray movie with BD-Live features and the servers containing the content go down, how will I get that bonus content that I am paying for? It seems to me that there’s not going to be any way for me to get my bonus features once those servers go down.

Is all BD-Live content hosted by Sony or is that up to the individual publishers to host? If it’s all hosted by Sony, then I have some level of assurance that the company won’t go out of business anytime soon and lose its servers, but if it’s up to smaller publishers, then I have concerns. This is why I like all of my bonus features to come on the discs themselves. I really don’t like the idea of relying on some sort of special downloading service for this. Some BD-Live features don’t sound too special to be honest, but in the case of the first season of Dexter, well, almost every one of the features is on BD-Live and that really pisses me off.
